Retailers are keen for you to buy, buy, buy and spend, spend, spend during the festive season – but when you know your recipient is short on space, it can be hard to select a thoughtful gift.
Our first tip would be to talk with your recipient to find out what they would really like to receive. But here are some ideas for clutter-free gifts that will delight any downsizer.
Christmas gifts that get used up
Any gift that can be consumed and the packaging recycled is a winner for people living a clutter-free life. As well as bath and shower products, think household consumables, or luxury versions of everyday products. Remember that some people really don’t like to receive gifts linked to housework, but others will be thrilled to have a new cleaning product to try, so it’s best to ask if you’re not sure.
Foodie gifts
Homemade treats are heartfelt, but shop goodies will be welcomed too. Avoid food gifts that come with unwanted mugs, glasses and utensils, and packaging that will become clutter. Instead look out for meal kits and baking ingredient kits that will give a few hours of fun as well as a tasty treat.
You could even put together your own kit to share a favourite recipe – and provide a supermarket voucher for the fresh ingredients to give a bit of flexibility.
Spirits and mixers are another time-honoured gift that will be welcomed by many.
Ready to replace or repair
If you know your recipient well, look out for items they use regularly that are worn out or broken – a carefully selected replacement could be just the thing to put a smile on their face.
If a repair is possible, then you could research, recommend and pay for a repair or restoration service. But if you’re a handy type, perhaps you yourself have the skills to provide a repair.
The gift of time
You could also offer your time in other ways. Sometimes, a set date and a bit of company is all it takes to get the job done. So how about a voucher for help with a household task they’ve been putting off, such as making the most of the space at home by setting up a self-storage unit, or even just helping them take the first step by costing up self-storage options, including self-storage insurance.
Memberships to local attractions
There are few things better than strolling past the entrance queue at a theme park or beauty spot because you’ve got membership. Memberships are a great way to treat a friend – and they’ll think fondly of you every time they visit. Gifting a membership also supports charities like the National Trust and English Heritage, not to mention local historical sites, attractions and local wildlife trusts.
Shared experiences as gifts
One of the best foundations for a strong friendship is to do things together, which is why shared experiences make great gifts.
Experience vouchers can seem like a solid choice of clutter-free gift, but many people find it surprisingly challenging to redeem them. In most cases, it may be better to discuss the gift beforehand and make a booking directly.
Search local listings for events that you can enjoy together, or ask for recommendations. Whether it’s an escape room, a guided walk, an after-hours tour of a local attraction, or a sporting event or activity, co-ordinate calendars and book those tickets. It’s so good to have something to look forward to at the end of January or during the dark winter weeks of February!
